Existe una larga tradición en el budismo que busca la cesación completa del ciclo de la vida y la muerte, conocida como Nirvana. En el siglo V a. C., el príncipe Siddhartha Gautama alcanzó esta liberación definitiva. Renunció a su vida principesca y se convirtió en un asceta errante, practicando rigurosas austeridades. Siguiendo el Camino Medio, un enfoque equilibrado entre la indulgencia y las dificultades extremas, se liberó del apego y el sufrimiento.
Como todos los seres en el ciclo del samsara, el Buda vivió muchas vidas pasadas antes de alcanzar la iluminación. Gracias al mérito acumulado durante estas vidas, renació en el Cielo de Tushita. Como el Bodhisattva conocido como "Bandera Blanca" o Shvetaketu, perfeccionó sus cualidades y esperó el momento y el lugar apropiados para su último nacimiento en este mundo.
