About the Artwork

Also known as Lama Tsongkhapa, he was born in 1357 in Tibet and became a monk at an early age. He studied under many respected masters, gaining profound insight into Buddhist philosophy, especially the teachings on emptiness and compassion. He also explored medicine, astronomy, and poetry.

Je Tsongkhapa revitalized Tibetan Buddhism through the founding of the Gelug tradition, which stressed monastic discipline, ethical conduct, and scholarly debate. His writings, especially the Lamrim Chenmo, remain core texts in Tibetan Buddhist study. In thangka art, he is depicted as a peaceful, enlightened figure with a gentle smile and benevolent expression, symbolizing his deep compassion and clarity.
