About the Artwork

The Wheel of Life Thangka, also known as Bhavachakra, is one of the most meaningful and educational artworks in Tibetan Buddhism. It visually illustrates the cycle of Samsara. The endless cycle of existence shaped by karma and desire.

At the center of the wheel, the three poisons. Ignorance, attachment, and aversion. Drive the circle of life, symbolized by a pig, rooster, and snake. Surrounding them are the six realms of existence: gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings. The outer rim portrays the twelve links of dependent origination. The chain that binds beings to continuous rebirth.
